Night of the Wolf - Chicago B Boy Style!

By Freeride Junkie | October 7, 2008

Night of the Wolf - Al Foster Band

Check out this cool B Boy video backed by Night of the Wolf by the Al Foster Band. I have a copy of the original 7″ on Roulette Records (1975) and was just checking it’s current Value when I came across the vid. Apparently it’s sold recently on Ebay for £100! Not bad considering I swapped it in the early 90’s for a record that cost me 99p! FRJ

Taking a sneaker bite of the Big Apple

By SneakerFreak | September 27, 2008

Old school hip hop dude

AS the birthplace of hip hop, New York was always down with the latest kicks, with the B Boys of the Bronx rockin’ the latest Puma suedes, shelltoes and Adidas campus back in the day.

So, obviously, with a city so engrained in the world of sneaker culture, when Sneakerfreak recently paid a visit to the Big Apple, it was a match made in heaven.

Trainer shops can be found on virtually every corner of Manhattan, but for those exclusive numbers, collectors need to head off downtown to Soho and Greenwich Village.

In these bohemian districts, once the home of such musical luminaries as Bob Dylan and Jimi Hendrix, you’ll find shops including Adidas Originals, Burton, DC Shoes, Stussy and A Bathing Ape, with many of the stores selling trainers a lot cheaper than back home in Blighty, especially at present with the pound so much stronger than the dollar.

As well as selling some tasty one offs, including a service in Adidas Originals which will actually make you your own custom made kicks, the shops are all on a mission to outdo each other in the decor stakes with many coming on like art galleries than retail stores.

In the Bathing Ape shop, which is as exclusive as it gets, the place is bedecked from floor to ceiling in owner Nigo’s ape influenced camo print and the bright patent leather Bapesta sneakers presented to customers on a revolving metal plate, a bit like you’d see in a Japanese sushi bar, although unlike the raw fish the trainers here will set you back considerably more.

Nike Air Whistler - A hard working shoe!

By Freeride Junkie | September 23, 2008

Nike Air Whistler - Freeride Junkie

Although my Etnies and Vans do a great job on the street sessions and even dirt jumping. When it comes to going big on the trails there’s only one shoe for me - the Nike Air Whistler.

Introduced in the UK in 2006 with very limited distribution and only produced for one season. The Nike Air Whistler is a far from mainstream shoe and seems to have become one of Nike’s best kept secrets even in biking circles.

The shoe itself was designed in conjunction with pro DH/freerider Andrew Shandro and was made for the big hits of Whistler and Vancouver’s North Shore.

Shoe details: Nike’s proprietary 047+ sticky rubber outsole keeps your feet glued to pedals for in flight control with a NIKE AIR cushion heel for comfortable landings. High abrasion coated leather uppers protect and are extremely durable and a molded heel and inside pad protects ankles from crank abuse. Recessed lacing and a keeper strap keeps laces out of the chain ring.

Basically the shoe keeps your feet stuck to the pedals when you need them to be and protects your feet and ankles from heavy landings and bails.  Which is just what you need if your pushing yourself to your limit.

My Whistlers took a trip down to Chicksands near Bedford with me at the weekend and they certainly helped take care of some high level bails off of some of the skinny north shore there.

So if your usual shoes are a bit too softcore for hardcore riding then if you can find them the Nike Air Whistlers are the shoe for you. FRJ

Every girl loves a geek! Gravis, Pointer and Clae

By SneakerFreak | September 16, 2008

Gravis Royale Khaki Houndstooth

TO swoosh or not to swoosh, that’s the question as the big 40 edges ever nearer that I find myself asking.

Now I’m not saying Nike don’t have some rather tasty offerings out at the moment. But these days I often find myself favouring more sedate numbers, rather than much of the neon-ness that’s out there at the moment.

As well as the big THREE, Nike, Adidas and Puma there’s a new breed of sneaks out there for those of a certain age who still want to look cool, but don’t want to look like Kevin the teenager.

Brands such as Gravis, Pointer and Clae all have their fingers on the pulse, without being all ‘nu-rave’.

While Gravis is the footwear branch of uber-cool snowboard label Burton, Pointer and Clae also have some rather tasty offerings on the shelf at present.

Clae, an American brand, is the brainchild of Sung Choi, formely of DC Shoes, who set it up as he felt there was a void in the market of shoes he and his mates wanted to wear and set about producing a range of trainers ‘for grown ups.’ The range now includes some rather nice looking shoes such as the Romare hit top and Parker, all using top quality materials in muted colourways.

A bit closer to home, Pointer was set up by an ex-production manager for Brit brand Silas who decided he was a bit bored of the latest ‘limited edition sneakers’ and set about designing such styles as the Pointer Taylor and Mathieson, designs which give a bit of a sneaky knowing nod to the shoes favoured by your old geography teacher, who always knew geek chic was the way forward.

So remember, if like Sneaker Freak you find yourself in mid-thirties limbo, don’t go down the dad route, take a step back, forget the Nike Air Jordan re-issues, you’re not 18 anymore, and look to Jarvis for inspiration, every girl loves a geek!
