The Iconic Nike Windrunner Jacket

The late Seventies. Nylon running jackets and pants were “sportswear,” literally worn for sport. Back then, to make it “Nike Sportswear,” Nike applied innovation. Moved seams off the shoulders to help eliminate chafing and improve water resistance. The resulting 26-degree chevron made the Windrunner instantly recognizable. By the mid-80s, the jacket was indispensable. Nearly as important to windmills and backspins as a fine piece of lino.
I remeber getting my first winrunner back in about 1984. My choice of windrunner was the one known as the ‘Nike Padded’ jacket. It was black and grey as oppose to the blue and red of the non padded version. Not many people had this one as I got it from a specialist running shop so I was well chuffed with it. That was until, a couple of months later, when a caught the arm on a sticking out bolt at a disused factory…not sure why we there…but anyway, it tore the sleeve and I was gutted. Especially as I decided that if I had the non padded version it wouldn’t have happened as the sleeves didn’t puff out as much on them! That’ll teach me to wear my best gear for doing daft stuff!! FRJ
