From Hacienda FAC-51 to Adidas Campus

By Freeride Junkie | June 21, 2008

Adidas Campus Corduroy 1995Well this isn’t really the most appropriate 1st post for a freesports blog but hey, I had never even heard of freesports back in the day when I was going down the Hac. Before I discovered freesports I got my kicks at clubs like the Hacienda, Konspiracy, Quadrant Park…this was 1989/1990. Footwear of the day for me, wasn’t trainers, it was a pair of Kicker Hi Kicks in red…and they spent many a happy Thursday night stompin on the stage at the Hacienda’s Temperance night. Back then it was the wilderness years for trainers, at least for me and it wasn’t until Adidas re released the Campus in 1993/94 that I found a shoe I was comfortable wearing. Having said that for some reason they were only sold for a limited time in the UK and I missed getting a pair. So it wasn’t until 1995 that I managed to get the new release of the shoe, in corduroy. I remember rocking these, complete with phat laces, down to a Chemical Brothers gig at the Academy in Manchester and the shoe receiving quite a bit of attention. Back then there wasn’t much going on retro wise with trainer manufacturers and this wasn’t just retro but a new take on a retro shoe so it was pretty cool. Soon after this shoe came the re issue of the Campus from ’94 but unfortunately it was made using softer material and didn’t quite have the same vibe of the ’93/94 version. As there was limited availability of cool retro trainers I still bought a pair. Anything retro was esssential as I was down with the Acid Jazz vibe at the time. Anyway, soon after the whole retro thing took off and now you can’t move for them …but I still have love for my old battered Campus. FRJ
