What any self respecting 30-something should be rocking

By SneakerFreak | June 17, 2008

My Adidas NY

ROBBIE Williams may have started dressing like his dad, if you believe his lyrics, but for me I’m more concerned about not looking like my next door neighbour’s 16-year-old son.

Although I’m still early twenties in my heart, in reality 40 is banging on the door, with just three years to go before I reach the dreaded number.

Now you may be wondering what this has all got to do with trainers, after all this is a website dedicated to sneaker culture, but for someone who’s always been at the cutting edge of fashion reaching the age of 37 is the stuff of nightmares.

While these days, the boundaries between age and fashion have somewhat blurred, skin tight drainpipes, biker jacket and trilby are better left to the teenagers or Pete Doherty.

This I believe also applies to trainers. While the hip hop kids may be rockin the latest Air Jordan Spiz’ikes, checking in at a cool £94.99, someone my age probably wouldn’t be able to get away with it anymore, even though I remember Nike’s original tribute to Michael back in the day.

Now while I may have recently purchased some Adidas New Yorks, in a cool new reissue colourway of electric blue complete with neon orange laces, I do sometimes wonder if I can still get away with them, even though everyone’s told me I could pass for late twenties.

For someone whose a sneaker fiend you may think reaching a certain age is a disaster, but it’s all a matter of how you wear your footwear.

If you’re going to rock your lime green Clydes, complete with phat laces, just remember don’t pair them with a matching tracksuit, even if it’s the same one worn by Fab Five Freddie on the Blondie video. Just remember keep it subtle and you won’t go wrong. And remember, Peter Stringfellow’s never seen in trainers, so at least you’ll never be mistaken for him.
